Everything you need to know about calculating your reselling profits

Our reselling calculator helps you calculate your true profit after all fees, shipping costs, and expenses. Simply enter your item's listing price and cost, select your platform and product category, and we'll show you a complete breakdown of platform fees, shipping costs, and your net profit. We support 18+ platforms including eBay, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark, StockX, and more.

Yes! Our calculator is 100% free with no registration required. We don't collect any personal information and you can use it unlimited times.

No account needed! You can use the calculator immediately without signing up or providing any information.

We currently support 18 major reselling platforms:

  • General Marketplaces: eBay, Amazon, Mercari, Facebook Marketplace, Bonanza
  • Fashion: Poshmark, Depop, Grailed, Curtsy, Vinted
  • Sneakers/Streetwear: StockX, GOAT
  • Handmade/Vintage: Etsy
  • Specialty: TCGplayer (trading cards), Whatnot (live auctions), Chairish (furniture), Kidizen (kids items)
  • Your Own Store: Shopify

Yes! We update our fee structures regularly based on official platform documentation. However, platforms can change fees at any time, so we recommend verifying current rates on the platform's seller help pages for critical decisions. Our calculator includes all major fees including selling fees, payment processing, listing fees, and platform-specific charges.

We include ALL major fees for each platform:

  • Selling/Commission fees - Main platform commission (varies by platform)
  • Payment processing - Credit card processing fees (~3%)
  • Listing fees - Per-item fees (e.g., Etsy\'s $0.20, eBay after 250 listings)
  • Transaction fees - Additional per-sale charges
  • Platform-specific fees - Regulatory fees (Etsy 0.3%), authentication shipping (StockX $13.95), etc.
  • Optional fees - Subscriptions, promoted listings, instant payouts (toggle on/off)

eBay charges different final value fees based on category. Electronics are only 4% compared to 13.95% for most categories. This is because eBay wants to compete with Amazon in the electronics category. Books and media have the highest fees at 14.95%. Always select the correct category in our calculator to get accurate fee estimates.

Etsy charges multiple fees: (1) Transaction fee is 6.5% of the sale price, (2) Payment processing is 3% + $0.25, and (3) Regulatory operating fee is 0.3% of the sale + shipping. The regulatory fee was added in 2024 and many calculators forget to include it. Combined, these fees total about 10-11% before the listing fee.

Yes! Vinted charges ZERO fees to sellers. Instead, buyers pay a 5% + $0.70 protection fee plus shipping. This means you keep 100% of your listing price. However, buyers paying extra fees might make them more price-sensitive, so competitive pricing is still important.

It depends on your item category and price point. Vinted (0% for sellers), Facebook Marketplace local sales (0%), and Bonanza (3.5%) have the lowest fees. However, higher-fee platforms like eBay and Poshmark often have more buyers and faster sales. The best platform balances fees with traffic and your target audience. Use our calculator to compare specific scenarios.

Both are great for authenticated sneakers. GOAT offers two payout options: 5% commission for store credit or 8.5-9.5% for cash, plus a $2.90 seller fee and ~$12 shipping to authentication. StockX charges 8-9.5% (tiered) + 3% processing + $13.95 shipping. GOAT's credit option has lower fees if you buy sneakers regularly. Our calculator can compare both side-by-side.

Poshmark uses a flat-rate $7.97 USPS Priority Mail label for all items under 5lbs. While this is great for heavy items, it can deter buyers on low-priced items. For example, a $12 shirt costs the buyer $19.97 + tax = ~$22 total. Consider offering discounted shipping promotions or bundling items to improve the value proposition.

Shopify's $39+/month makes sense if you're serious about building a brand and selling higher volumes. You pay no commission per sale (only 2.9% + $0.30 credit card fees), keep all customer data, and control your branding. Break-even is roughly 5-10 sales per month compared to 20% commission platforms. Best for established sellers with consistent inventory.

Yes! Many resellers cross-post to multiple platforms to maximize visibility. Tools like List Perfectly and Vendoo can help manage inventory across platforms. Just be careful to remove listings immediately when an item sells to avoid selling the same item twice. Our calculator helps you determine which platform will be most profitable for each item.

Free shipping typically increases conversion rates by 20-30% but you need to factor the cost into your listing price. Platforms like eBay boost free shipping listings in search rankings. Psychology matters: buyers prefer "$30 with free shipping" over "$25 + $5 shipping" even though the total is the same. For expensive or heavy items, charging accurate shipping is often better.

Our calculator includes average shipping costs by product category. For accurate estimates: (1) Weigh your item with packaging, (2) Measure box dimensions, (3) Use USPS, UPS, or FedEx online calculators, or (4) Use platform-provided prepaid labels (usually 5-15% discounted). Most clothing ships for $5-8 USPS First Class, while heavier items need Priority Mail ($9-16).

Packaging costs include boxes/mailers ($0.25-1.50), bubble wrap or packing paper ($0.10-0.50), tape ($0.05-0.10), and optional extras like tissue paper, stickers, or thank-you cards ($0.10-0.50). Our calculator estimates $0.30-3.00 based on category. Fragile items like electronics or collectibles need more protection and higher costs.

Yes! Most platforms offer discounted prepaid labels:

  • Etsy: Up to 30% off USPS (avg ~11% savings)
  • eBay: Up to 8% off USPS, UPS, FedEx
  • Mercari: 8-15% off USPS, UPS, FedEx prepaid labels
  • Facebook Marketplace: 30% off UPS/FedEx (no USPS)
  • Poshmark: Flat $7.97 USPS Priority (can be cheaper for heavy items)

Always compare platform labels vs buying postage directly.

Yes. The IRS considers reselling a business activity. As of 2024, platforms report earnings over $600/year (Form 1099-K threshold). You'll owe self-employment tax (15.3%) plus income tax based on your bracket. Keep records of all expenses (item costs, fees, shipping, supplies) as these are tax-deductible and reduce your taxable income.

Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) on your net profit. Unlike W-2 employees where employers pay half, self-employed sellers pay the full amount. This is IN ADDITION to regular income tax. Our calculator can estimate this in the tax section if you enable it.

Yes! Common deductible expenses include:

  • Cost of goods sold (what you paid for items)
  • Shipping supplies (boxes, tape, labels, bubble wrap)
  • Platform fees and subscriptions
  • Shipping costs you pay
  • Mileage for sourcing/shipping trips ($0.655/mile in 2024)
  • Home office deduction (if you have dedicated space)
  • Equipment (scales, printers, shelving)

Consult a tax professional for personalized advice.

An LLC provides liability protection and can simplify taxes, but isn't required for casual sellers. Consider an LLC if you're: (1) Making significant income ($20k+/year), (2) Want to separate personal and business assets, or (3) Plan to scale into a full business. Sole proprietorships are simpler for small sellers. Consult a CPA or business attorney.

We monitor official platform announcements and update fees as soon as changes are announced. Major platforms typically update fees 1-2 times per year. If you notice outdated information, please contact us. Always verify fees for major decisions on the platform's official seller documentation.

Several factors can cause differences: (1) Your specific seller level or subscription tier, (2) International sales may have additional fees, (3) Category-specific variations, (4) Promotional fee waivers, (5) Recent platform fee changes, or (6) Returns/refunds which aren't factored into initial calculations. Our calculator provides estimates for standard scenarios.

Our calculator shows estimated return rates by category (e.g., clothing 15%, electronics 8%) for reference, but doesn't deduct return costs from profit calculations. Returns vary greatly by item condition, description accuracy, and category. Factor in your personal return rate if you have historical data.

Our calculator provides accurate estimates for planning and comparison, but shouldn't replace professional financial advice for major business decisions. Use it to compare platforms, estimate profitability, and plan pricing strategies. For tax planning, inventory financing, or business formation decisions, consult qualified professionals.

We update our calculator as soon as we're aware of fee changes. For critical decisions, always verify current fees on the platform's official help documentation. You can also check the last update date on each platform page.
